soil table by ori mishkal

ori mishkal, a student of the belzalel design academy in jerusalem, has sent in images
of a recent project he's completed entitled 'soil table'. questioning the place of nature
in our lives, mishkal wanted to design an object which suggested a way to bring nature
into the living space in an intimate way. constructed from a ready-made table, soil, iron net
and ferns (mishkal chose fern as it is known for its love for shade), he reverted the growing
of the plants to allow one to see the 'underground growth' of the plants by placing them upside
down to grow.

unlike how we usually see plants, here, mishkal has hidden the ferns and instead made the
soil the most visible component. not exactly a table or a flowerpot, the 'soil table' is a bit of a
disturbing object, where one is accompanied by the strange feeling of plants on the hips
when sitting at the table.

I have a double feeling about this. I think it looks great, and the idea is awesome too... however, plants tend to die if you try weird stuff to them like this. I am very curious how long this will last. I dont mean to give bullshit, I am honestly interested in how long it lasts, because I am experimenting with green in design myself.

I love this table. It brings to mind the idea that in a world that is upside down we can still survive as long as our roots are deeply rooted right side up!!
Fantastic idea!!!!

This piece definitely makes you stop for a minute. There's something that grabbed my attention as soon as those upside-down plants met my eye. It is as though this normal looking table has a secret it wants to hide, but can't. It's trying to blend in, but has no chance to. Very good work.

Disturbing and unexpected it caught my attention. although it doesn't seems comfortable.
