tokyo design week 08: flat bulb by joonhuyn kim

'flat bulb' is designed by korean designer joonhuyn kim. unlike ordinary bulbs its volume
is 1/3 smaller, reducing the cost of packaging and transport. its slim shape allows bulbs
to be easily stacked and prevents breakage as it does not roll. his work was on display
as part of 100% design tokyo.

errr... yeh ... plus it looks badass

w o n d e r f u l !
seriously, i like it very very much!
razorprod@hotmail.fr   11.05.08
Very cool. Until someone sticks a metal object in the gap between the socket and the bulb end. That may need a bit of a design tweak before putting on the market.
deadskin   11.05.08
Who in their right mind would say, "Oh, there's a gap, I should fill it with something metal"???
It's no different then leaving a light bulb socket, or power socket open with nothing in it.
really, I mean, really?   11.05.08
theres a reason bulbs are not flat....
the circular design help to cool the thread via thermal convecyion inside the bulb
this does no do that and probably has a life time of less then 400hours
kk   11.06.08
On the contrary, conventional bulbs are the shape they are to resist the internal vacuum.
JW   11.06.08
lightbulbs have no vacuum. they are filled with an inert gas. don't believe me? get a torch, and heat up a spot on a lightbulb until it is soft. if there were a vacuum, it would flow inwards. however, it does not. so, inert gas.

C'est super.
Mais quelle est sa consomation !
Pour l'instant elle ressenble à une lampe à incandescence. Il faudra concevoir un modèle plus économe.
dany   11.06.08
@Dany

Bien vue Dany!

in english :

So the aim of this bulb is to reduce the cost of packaging and transport. But a compact fluorescent lamp have a better livespan and a better energy efficiency!
In long-term, a compact fluorescent lamp would be probably more ecological and profitable.

So we can call that (in french) :
- masturbation cérébrale
- écologie de comptoire
- etc...

Yup, "not a compact fluorescent" was the first thing I thought of, too. Incandescent bulbs on their way out, this will go nowhere.

HMMMMMMM...

Ecological... Friendly????... Fluorescent bulb...

Full of Mercury... Deadly gas. Polluting landfills..
Not living up to life or light hype....

Nah... Wait for soon to be cheaper, less wattage and really eco-friendly LEDs...

You would think the environmentally conscious would think their ideas through...

(like 'lithium batteries for cars..." total supply available for ...
Not 100,000,000 cars...
Not 1,000,000 cars.....
Not 100,000 cars...

But...

65,000 cars

world wide...

So...

They raise their hopes and destroy the future's supply...

on a bad solution...

Real eco-nim-nulls.

(Solutions are coming... You don't put hopes on half0-baked ecominds. Like their High Priest AlGore... they are usually really wrong.

Nifty as hell. Unfortunately, this design has got to take a lot more effort manufacturing than a traditional bulb. Which I can buy in a 4-pack at the dollar store.

Get 'em down to under 50 cents each and I'd consider buying a few.
G. Ikari   11.11.08
cool one !!
is it bright enough ?

traditional lightbulbs could last much longer than they actually do. 400 hours is just the timespan manufacturers agreed upon (its the thickness of the thread inside i guess).
if you simply put "modern technology" like LED in it, it will be more eco-friendly and better to pack and look cool.
even if the traditional light bulb has no future, there are zillion of sockets for it....

cual es la innovacion?
afrieri   11.20.08
I appreciate the efforts of this designer and the work they have put into designing this item, but sadly it's just another unnecessary design gimmick.

Design promoters and designers should be focusing on real world issues that need addressing for the betterment of the planet and human race, and divert their time and attention away from anthropogenic ephemeral novelties such as this.

As far as Eco-nim-nulls go, each new invention in tackling environmental issues is a step in an evolution of design, that will always have faults that are addressed in the next step of that evolution. A perfect solution is nearly never created in one step!
kentg   12.01.08
so.. do we have to forget about the initial reason why bulb should be round? um...
I don't think we could easily drop those basic reasons....unless suggest another solution for that but that one doesn't look like solve that prob.
not sure   12.01.08
For me it's good design joke but not real product design
an   12.02.08
man, this design is such a waste of effort.
LED is the future of lamps
