japanese practice apollo architects has completed ‘fold’, a single family home in tokyo, japan.
situated on a polygonal site, sandwiched between two neighboring structures, the solitary building
looks to at once integrate with and contrast it’s surrounding environment.

defined by its geometric form and diagonally slopping roof, the design features a contrived,
origami-like facade which rhythmically unfolds to reveal the interior spaces. cantilevered over the site,
the home looks to become a sequential space with twofold characteristics, providing fully exposed and
fully enclosed living environments.

voyeuristic in its approach, the main volume of the home is open to both the street and the sky, revealing
in many ways all evidence of life and activity inside. windows cut through the face and roof of the unit,
interrupting the visual continuity of space while introducing natural light into the depths of the dwelling.

a single staircase penetrates through the two storey structure and connects the primary spaces with a private terrace.
inside, a vast and open room contains all public functions – kitchen, living, dining – while bedrooms are housed within
a dark and cavernous space on the ground level.
