a work of substance has completed the interior and branding design for ‘mother pearl’, a 32 sqm vegan bubble tea shop in hong kong. from the pastel color scheme to the biodegradable napkins and cups and terracotta brick, the multidisciplinary collective has translated the brand’s commitment to health and sustainability into a dreamy spatial and product experience.

open onto the street, mother pearl invites passersby inside with a single street light and its smooth, curved forms, which were a deliberate choice by a work of substance to contrast with the strict geometry of the city. dark olive green articulates the façade before leading into a warm interior clad in terracotta brick. terracotta was selected to reflect mother pearl’s root-to-stem approach and the natural ingredients they brew into every cup. above customers’ heads, there’s a cloud of bubble-like lighting that makes direct reference to the bubble tea on offer while emanating a soft glow of light.
the design team has also taken care of the details to create a completely unified experience. they inserted a sand-blasted glass menu above the counter and designed the mother pearl logo with her long, flowing hair. the logo can be seen in various iterations: from the façade to the pearl-shaped street lamp, to the napkins and cups that come with your tea.
