Kung-Tung Church stands as A Modernist Landmark in Taitung

Kung-Tung Church, designed by Swiss architect Dr. Justus Dahinden, stands as a significant example of modernist architecture in Taiwan, completed in 1958. Often referred to as ‘The Notre-Dame-du-Haut of Taiwan,’ this structure embodies a unique blend of functional design and architectural innovation.

Located within a Technical Senior High School in Taitung City, the building originally served multiple purposes, housing faculty dormitories, classrooms, a canteen, and a chapel. At the time of its construction, it was the tallest building in Taitung City, representing an efficient solution to the diverse needs of the school. The church is photographed of YHLAA studio.

YHLAA captures Kung-Tung Church’s architectural intricacies

The building suffered damage during the 9-21 and 3-31 earthquakes, leading to its classification as a dangerous structure. In 2004, a thorough structural examination was conducted, and with the help of donations, a six-year renovation project restored the church to its former functionality. Today, Kung-Tung Church is recognized as one of the most important buildings in Taiwan, having been selected by the World Heritage Committee for its architectural significance. YHLAA studio captures the church’s unique form and spatial narration.
