the ‘bubble sofa’ by yu-jui (kevin) chou is one of the newest projects developed through the yii initiative that seeks to bring traditional taiwanese craft techniques into a contemporary light. on show at the triennale di milano during milan design week 2011, the sofa refers to the history of bamboo furniture, demonstrating the material’s endless structural possibilities. its light yet stable construction is made from a total of 999 hand-woven bamboo balls, one of the most common elements found in a bamboo craftsman’s studio. these elements are connected through the use of metal rings and rubber. produced in collaboration with craftsman su-jen su, the unit measures H52 x W166 x D70 cm with a seat height of 35 cm.
