In Design Miami (read our ultimate guide here to not miss the must-see public art), ceramic artist Jeremy Anderson presents his latest body of work for Gallery FUMI, illuminating them for visitors to fully appreciate his crafted, human-sized totemic lamps sculpted from clay. The Gallery FUMI commission was created specifically for Design Miami, and Jeremy Anderson introduces not one but three life-sized floor lamps named Coraline, Emmet, and Sky, and a lighting installation titled Space Relics suspended off the ground.

Jeremy Anderson’s works can be viewed between December 6th and 10th, 2023, at Booth G10 on Convention Center Drive and 19th Street at Miami Beach, alongside works of other artists represented by Gallery FUMI. On December 5th, 2023, Gallery FUMI announced that it received the Best Gallery Presentation Award at Design Miami, another festive event to celebrate alongside Jeremy Anderson’s installation-esque lighting.

His human-sized clay lamps embody totemic figures and are adorned with hand-painted vertical lines. Their domed disc-shaped body parts refer to their heads or bodies, and from afar, these clay lamps do resemble veiled humans of the advanced future. It may make sense since Jeremy Anderson draws his design influences from the themes of space or ideas of a utopian planet. The pendant vines alone symbolize reaching down from the sky and lighting the path as they cascade from their domes.

Gallery fumi showcases jeremy anderson’s utopic lamps

When Jeremy Anderson comments about his floor lamps made of clay for Gallery FUMI and Design Miami, he reveals that part of his design cues are from the motifs of the fantasy world he has created from the ancient material of clay. ‘While their illumination feels futuristic with exposed LED strips adorning hexagon segments behind subtly tinted borosilicate glass,’ says Jeremy Anderson.

His lamps as a metaphor for a utopic planet are further underscored when he hangs his Space Relics, a lighting installation made of three pendants. The shape of dome heads and body parts still emerge, but since they appear upside-down and repeatedly, the form of the lamps may be deduced as giant torches or chalices. The painted vertical lines make the presence of the hanging lamps known, delineated by the contrasting colors.

part-humanoid, part-totemic figures for lamps

Jeremy Anderson works predominantly in stoneware and porcelain. He creates anthropomorphic and functional pieces that he manifests from his personal experiences with people, cultures, architecture, and even nature. A peek at his human-sized clay lamps at Design Miami may already give viewers an idea of his introspective side and his fascination with the fantastical tinged with history and spirituality.

These lighting pieces are further molded to step into the shoes of part-humanoid, part-totemic figures, signaling a style that may only point toward Jeremy Anderson’s oeuvre. ‘The inspiration for these illuminated pieces comes through my exploration of shapes and forms that I ultimately create as characters that become my studio playmates,’ says Jeremy Anderson. With his recent body of work for Gallery FUMI, the ceramic artist taps into his imagination, broadening his imaginary world to let his utopic visions in.
